Celebrated for her work in Hindi and Bengali films since her teenage debut in 1963, she has won eight Filmfare Awards and the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honour awarded by the Government of India. Regarded as one of the most celebrated actresses of Indian cinema, she was one of the highest paid actresses of the 1970s.
