Audience Reviews

Alunauwie 9/10 Sep 17, 2025
Yurigokoro is a gripping psychological thriller based on Mahokaru Numata’s novel, exploring the chilling life of a girl shaped into a killer from childhood, wrapped in intense emotional and moral complexities. With outstanding performances—especially from the child actor—and immersive storytelling, the film balances disturbing content with powerful cinematic elements that keep viewers emotionally invested throughout its runtime. Not suitable for viewers under 18 due to its dark themes, Yurigokoro is a haunting reflection on parental neglect and the tragic consequences of a lost moral compass.

I'm sorry but, contrary to what this disappointing Japanese thriller wants us to believe, pregnancy and childbirth are no cure to inborn psychopathy. This is just one of many problems with this movie.

If you go into it expecting a well-written mystery thriller that will keep you guessing till the end and then surprise you with an incredible twist, then you're going to be utterly disappointed. This is merely a love story - a poorly written one at that - that uses thriller and horror elements to try to sell itself to lovers of these genres. Yet, even as such, there are aspects of its plot that stretch credulity to breaking point e.g., a couple of "coincidences" in it are the sort you only see in soap dramas and telenovellas (no disrespect to these genres).

This is sad given that there was so much potential with this movie. The kind of female villain created here is such that, in the hands of more capable writers, she'd have been a much more powerful force - a villain for the history books - than the sobbing mess of a mother and housewife these writers reduce her to in the end.

So, if you're looking for a "dark romance" with a couple of shocking scenes and your ability to suspend disbelief has no limits, then this one is for you. Otherwise, you'll do well to stay well away from it, especially if you're a lover of mysteries and horrors looking for a movie with great thrills and twists.
