Meet You at the Blossom (2024)

“Meet me at the Blossom“, like "Kill to Love", is a historicizing Chinese series which many viewers would call bromance rather than BL. I know that this kind of series isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but they are my cup of tea.

Whatever may be said against the storyline, which is very common in Chinese (non-BL) series – the production quality of both series mentioned is overwhelming. The acting is top tier, too, because Chinese series tend to hire experienced and very handsome actors – not only Li Le, who plays the lead role of Huai En, and Wang Yun Kai as Xiao Bao, but also Kou Wei Long and Li Yi Mu, who play support roles here, but who both later played lead roles in “I’ll Turn Back this Time“, a mystery series. Kou Wei Long also played a support role in “To my Shore“.

This was at times both very simplistic and extremely complicated, and I'll explain what I mean. First though, it is a period piece where one guy rescues what he assumes is a 'damsel in distress', but in time he discovers that the damsel is really a dude. In time a relationship develops. For the easy part, the relationships between the characters are pretty simple, while the main couple has many twists and turns, generally the relationships are not hard to follow. What makes it complex is the back story. I think they were going for mystery and intrigue, but what they really did was create a confusing mess. There were dozens of minor characters, some appearing and some only being mentioned and there was no explanation at all as to what any of them were really trying to accomplish. We know that some were after a ledger, but the importance of that wasn't given up front. You can only really do mystery if someone has an idea of what needs to be solved. Finally, in episode 6 one character basically narrates what is going on, and you get about 98% of the story, then by episode 9 you get the last 2%, and keep in mind that this only 12 parts! If you can stick it out, you do get a good story as a whole, but they don't make it easy to get into. As for the ending, some have a happy ending, some hopeful and some don't make it the end. There are also some minor subplots aren't resolved.
