Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Calamity (2026)

Is this all part of His Majesty's grand design? Well that isn't so easy for the "Quincies" to determine when the "Soul Reapers" finally breach the security of his palace with startling consequences for their now rapidly diminishing reality. With an existential threat now being faced by everyone, it looks like old enmities are going to have to be set aside - at least for a while - whilst they all focus on staying alive. This feature conjoins the final episodes of the series and without a doubt the action photography is pretty impressive throughout this quickly paced adventure. Of course, if you haven't watched the series then you have to hit the ground running with the plot and the characterisations and that's not so straightforward. You have to concentrate a little harder which isn't so easy when you're relying on the rapid-fire subtitles frequently obscured being white-on-white on a big screen. That is something the producers of these manga-based presentations are going to have to deal with if they are to succeed in bringing these often compelling stories to new audiences - please don't just assume we all know everything before the titles start, because we don't. Maybe just the simplest of recaps would make a difference? There's a very basic Q&A at the end, which actually tells us little and appeared more an attempt to legitimise the theatrical release and as with any episodic compendium, we find the story that plays out misses much of the nuance that might make it's characters a little more interesting to complement the endless combat scenes and pyrotechnic denouement. That said, this is a stylishly crafted piece of television that condenses the three editions entertainingly, but I think this will really only resonate if you are already a proper fan of the "Bleach" series'. Newbies might feel a bit short-changed.
